So you want to be a Blogger but have no idea where to even start? I want to help you learn how to blog. I want to help you to take the unknown and make it understandable and the fear out of beginning something new. So from Sunday January 8th and even Sunday at 8pm through the end of January I will be teaching free class for those of you interested in starting your own Blog.
I am sure if you are thinking about it you must have some idea of what you want it for. Whether you are going away on a trip around Europe, want to share pictures with friends and family, want to start a blog to go along with your business, or want to review products and interact with other bloggers I am ready to help you get started. But before we even begin the first session here are some tips for getting started.
The most important thing in starting out is deciding what you want to blog about. If you are an antique car enthusiast and write about Jewelry you will probably get bored writing pretty quickly and you will stop blogging because it just doesn’t mean anything to you. On the other hand if you were to blog about Antique Cars because it is your passion but once in a while talk about a piece of Jewelry you saw at a car show it would make complete sense. If you are a farmer blog about your farm not what you think living a city life would be like. Basically Blog what you know and what you are passionate about. Your passion for the topic will shine through and people will find your blog and follow it (if you allow them to do so).
My personal opinion for those starting their first blog is going to be going in to use a FREE platform (you can always upgrade to your very own domain name and a more advanced platform).
My top choice for basically any blog starting out is Blogger / Blogspot. It is an easy format to learn and grown with and there are a ton of free nice backgrounds out there for you to choose from (don’t worry that is something I will help you with during the Sunday Sessions.) If you want a bit of an upgrade to a more personalized theme and layout there are designers who will work with you to create something to meet your needs for prices you can afford. I also like Blogger because people are used to visiting Blogger Blogs and what people know and understand they are willing to interact with. When you use Blogger you have the option of buying your domain name and hosting it on their platform for free.
For those of you who want to learn how to Blog for your BUSINESS I 100% think you need to spend the money on your own domain name and hosting plan (you can start with a very basic plan) you could start with a blogger blog but you have so many more options if you use self hosted WordPress. This blog is self hosted WordPress. I paid someone to switch me from Blogger and get us all set up here. They also created our first theme here. This current theme I installed myself and tweaked it to what I wanted. So it is doable even for someone who has never manipulated the platform before. There are easy to follow tutorials out there to help you. Since this is for your business if you want someone to set it up for you and make sure it is running smoothly there are people who will do it for under $100 with your layout to your specifications.
So now we covered making sure you are passionate about your blog topic and the platform I recommend using. Now you need to come up with a name for your blog. If you want your blog to be found by more then just friends and family who you send the link to you will want the name of your Blog to mean something to others who are as passionate about your topic as you are or who are interested in learning more about your topic. If you want your blog to be about whatever you are feeling that day something like Having Fun in the Mountains if you live in the mountains would be appropriate or A Sip of Coffee to Start Your Day. If you own a business hopefully you already purchased your domain name and just haven’t used it or something similar is available. Maybe a .NET address or a .CO or .TV. You can either go to GoDaddy.com (I know it isn’t the popular choice right now but I think they are easy to use and I have never had an issue with them) to see if the name is available or if you are just blogging for fun you can check when setting up your blog if a name is available.
Once you have figured all of that out you can get set up and just begin to blog. There are some rules you will want to keep in mind but when you are first getting started my thoughts are to just write and upload your pictures. You can always go back and edit something once we cover that topic.
Ready to get started and want to attend the Sunday sessions at 8pm? Just click here to fill in this form so that I can learn a bit more about you. Can’t figure out what to do? Feel free to send me an email with the subject line “I want to learn to blog”.
For those with their own Blogs who are looking for more advanced help I will be starting a session for you sometime after the 10th of January more info to come.
