Cooking for Dogs – Sweet Potato and White Potato

Cooking for your dog does not have to be a major chore that you devote hours and hours to a day. It doesn’t even have to be their main source of food it can be a topper to their food or a treat. You don’t even need to be good cook all you need is some very basic skills in the kitchen.

Today we are going to talk about cooked Sweet Potato and cooked White Potatoes which are both favorite grain free carbohydrates of my dogs. They will eat them separately or together and are so easy to make. In fact you can make it for your dogs at the same time you are making for your family. For this post I decided to boil them to make mashed potatoes but you can certainly bake them or cut them and then bake them if that is what your family is having that night. Remember the smaller the pieces you cut them into the faster the potato will cook. I made this for Davinia the other night because she wasn’t eating her food (she is fine she just prefers the treats grandpa has been giving her to the food I am providing).

I cut up one regular potato and one sweet potato of equal size. I left the skin on because the dogs were not getting very much of the end result but you need to make the right decision for your own dog. If your dog has never had potatoes with skin you might want to remove it especially if the skin is even slightly turning green.

You could even add some carrots to the mix and mash it into the potato and your dog will not even know it is in there (neither will the kids). Once you have boiled the potatoes and drained them I add less then a teaspoon of healthy oil you can use olive oil or flax seed oil or even Omega 3 if this is just for your dogs. I personally add a shake or two of garlic powder it makes it smell better for the dogs and will help keep away bugs. You could also boil a piece or two of garlic in the water with the potatoes as long as the garlic is cooked and you use a small amount it will not hurt your dog and is in many of the more premium foods. I save some of the water from boiling the potatoes to add back in when mashing. You can add more water if it is really dry in your house from the heat during the winter or if your pet doesn’t drink as much as you think they should. I also added a touch of salt (not really necessary when cooking for your pet) and some pepper (again not really necessary) but I was sharing these with Davinia and I didn’t overly spice them before giving her some.

Potatoes are a great base for the beginning of a home cooked meal or good topper for your pets food to add some fresh food into their diet. Potato is very gentle on their stomach so would be a good way to help get nutrients back into a dog that has been sick or one with allergies to grains. You can serve the potatoes slightly warmer then room temperature or room temperature. If you are used to feeding kibble remember that kibble is very dried out compared to food you will make yourself which will have a much higher water concentration so you will need to give more then what you would with a kibble.

PLEASE NOTE: Potatoes must be FULLY cooked before offering the to your dog. Uncooked or undercooked potatoes of any variety can lead to a visit to the Emergency Vet.

I often home cook for our dogs. I find that red, green and yellow peppers are a favourite vegetable and always make the meal look tastier! (I am not sure if the dogs agree with me on that one)

    • Your dogs are very well taken care of. Milk in a saucer and Fried Rice. I know where Davinia and Indiana would go to visit if they could. I am sure they appreciate all the yummy food you give them.
