Thai Buddhism calls for compassion and forbids killing any animal unnecessarily that compassion for animals is what has led to hundreds of stray dogs being left at the steps of Buddhist Temples all over Thailand. The monks will throw them scraps give them baths tot clean them up, and will catch them and bring them to be neutered so they cannot produce more puppies. While the monks do what they can for the dogs they do not have money to get them medication or take them to the vet when they are sick or injured. The monks rely on animal rescue organizations to visit the monetarists and provide what aid they can.
For the past few weeks the major problem facing the temples is flooding. The worst the country has seen in its recorded history. There is now major flooding as far inland as Bangkok and the water just keep coming. Along with trying to save their sacred texts from the Flood they are out there helping organizations to get dogs and in some cases cats to safety. The monks don’t know how to save the temples they have inherited guardianship over let alone what to do with all of the dogs and cats that have been left in their care.
The monks in one temple have joined together with an Elephant Rescue Organization to help get as many dogs in the city to safety. In this video you can see just how bad the situation has become in Thailand and the predicament the people and animals are facing.
