Dog Adoptions Opened After Distemper Scare

For 2 days dog adoptions at the Wisconsin Humane Society’s Milwaukee and Ozaukee campuses were stopped due to a puppy testing positive for distemper. Canine distemper is an often fatal viral illness that affects dogs of any age, however unvaccinated puppies are most susceptible. Distemper is highly contagious and so the decision had been made to halt futher adoptions until the facilities better understood if this was a single incident or indicative of the entire facility.

Test results confirmed an initial group of dogs to be at very low risk for contracting the virus and those animals will be made available for adoption at 10 a.m., today according to a Humane Society news release. According to the release, the dogs and puppies tested were previously vaccinated and demonstrated a high level of antibodies, which defend against distemper infection.

The dogs will be offered at 25% off the regular adoption fee.

The Ozaukee facility will be having their final Hounds and Sounds Concert this weekend featuring String Along, as they play at the 3rd Hounds and Sounds! Performing music in a variety of genres, their vocal and instrumental arrangements create an atmosphere of fun.
Enjoy live music, beer, wine and food on our outdoor patio overlooking the beautiful wetlands at the new Ozaukee shelter in Saukville. This casual event is sure to be a blast. Please leave your dogs at home; there will be plenty of adoptable pups and cats to greet you! No paper tickets will be mailed – please check in upon arrival.

Tickets are $10 each. All proceeds go right back to the shelter animals.
