Meet the Irish Water Spaniel

I was looking through the list of top ten breeds in Ireland and something struck me. Most of the dogs on the list just do not even appear on the top ten from other countries so I though I would use the list as a way to introduce you to some breeds you might never have heard of before. The Irish Water Spaniel is the number 4 dog in all of Ireland they have curly coats and look much like a Portuguese Water Dog and a Standard Poodle which makes sense when their origins are believed to be tied to those two breeds somehow. They cannot get enough of the water, and they excel in all things water sport, from where they have been known to retrieve quite a collection of animal-life but make great Dock Dogs as well.

As to the breed’s heredity, varying conjectures have been made. Certain breeds that always get named when trying to determine the origins of the Irish Water Spaniel are the Barbet, the Poodle, and the Portuguese Water Dog, along with several others. The breed as it now appears came of age in Ireland in the early 19th-century.
