Rose the Service Dog to Help Another Victim Testify in Court

Rose the Service Dog

We have been following the story of Rose the service dog in New York who in a landmark decision by a judge for the first time ever a dog was allowed to be present in court. Rose’s first job after weeks of training basically learning what a courtroom was meeting the and working with the victim while she was at her therapists office, meeting the prosecutor, the judge, and the defense attorney in order to help a molestation victim testify against her molester. Rose performed her job with flying colors as laid beneath the feet of the victim during her testimony. At times when on the stand turning tense moments Rose would even put her head in the 15 year old girls lap.

Picard, Rose’s owner and trainer since she was born  has been trying to get dogs into courtrooms in New York for two years. He was told it  would never happen because it would be distracting and could sway the jury. His rational for why they should be let into court is that it helpps the witness to be able to open u and testify.  “People get loud and scream [in court] and it shuts children down. If we could provide them a dog in court, it would make a big difference in how they respond,” Picard said. “When the dog gets the person to move, it changed the person’s state of mind and helps them to open up and talk.”

The judge was impressed with what Rose was able to accomplish and has been invited back to court to help another witness in another trial which is set to begin in a few weeks. there is also talk that if two young girls are going to be made to take the witness stand in their mother’s murder that the prosecutor will ask for Rosie to be there in order to help the young girls testify.

  1. That is so cool. We have been working with the courts here in Utah for a few years too. We have used dogs in two cases that i know of and it is such a break through. The kids really do respond to the presence of the dog during the trial.

Just touching and petting the dog during their testimony gives them strength.

I hope this news article makes the internet loop to open the possibilities all over.

    Thanks for keeping us informed
