Aurora Colorado to Allow Banned Breeds as Service Dogs

The City Council of Aurora, Colorado Monday night introduced an ordinance to allow their banned breeds as service dogs and also trimmed the list of restricted breeds in the city from 10 to three (Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier and Staffordshire Bull Terrier). “A dog does what it is trained to do, regardless of the breed,” said Linda Bryant, who supported holding dog owners more accountable rather than banning a specific breed. “A specific breed ban is not the solution to prevent attacks by dogs.”

In March a federal ruling took effect that allows for any type of dog to be a service dog. Before the march decision by the Federal Government Aurora Council had been working on the issue at the insistence of animal lovers to get rid of the breed ban. Updates to regulations in the Americans With Disabilities Act included clarification on the definition of a service animal. It includes wording that says all dogs that receive specialized Service Dog Training can be service dogs regardless of breed.
