Rainy Day Activities to Enjoy with Your Dog

This summer, don’t let a rainy day get you down. A little drizzle shouldn’t keep your pet from getting a much needed 30 minutes of exercise per day. There are still plenty of activities you can enjoy that can be done indoors (and even out!) when the rain is pouring down.

1. Visit a pet boutique.
Visit a local pet boutique and have fun browsing at all of the new clothing and accessories. You can even snag some new treats or toys, visit with other pet owners, and find some helpful advice while you are there. Most allow you to bring your pets in, so this is a fun activity to do together. Plus, the boutiques usually get samples of the really high end food that they carry and they share with their visitors as special treats. So even more fun!

2. Head to the local large scale pet store
Head to your local large scale pet store where dogs are always welcome. Browse the aisles and have fun exploring all of the new products. You can even take a class together while you are there or get a nail trim. If there are no classes that you can join you can sometimes work one on one with their trainer if they are not busy. Or you can use the store to reinforce training your dog already has.

3. Rough the rain!
As long as there is no lightning, go for roughing it out in the rain! Put on your boots and have fun frolicking in the puddles and exploring the raindrops. Your dog may actually like the rain, and it is a fun way to let loose and make some memories. Plus it means it isn’t going to be as hot. The rain changes the way the ground feels to your dog so this is a great activity if your dog will tolerate it especially if you go on the same walk on a daily basis.

4. Read a book together
If the weather is so bad that you cannot go out stay in grab a book and cuddle up with your dog. Your dog will appreciate the company in the rain with the lightning and thunder and you can catch up on your reading. When you get up to get a snack make sure to leave the book out of your dog’s reach or you might come back to a shredded book especially if you have a puppy. I learned that the hard way Davinia ate the last few pages of a book when she was a puppy. It is a good thing it was a book I had already read a bunch of times.

5. Watch a movie
Some dogs will get really into what they see on the screen. If your dog is one of them turn on a movie and enjoy some healthy snack together!
